Who writes the songs?

  • The stories of composers, together with their music, is like the history and scenery we visited on the Del Sol Express.
  • Just like a photograph, music is a cultural snapshot. A culture can be recognized by its music.
  • Composers develop their styles in music from the rhythms and sounds of their language, the materials from which instruments are made, the sounds and sights of their environments, and their recognition of common experiences. The music of a culture puts into sound emotions and memories of home. Music tells stories that help people share their origins and memories.
  • We may not understand music from another culture right away. We may be confused by the rhythms and sounds.
  • The rhythms and tempos of Latin American music can be joyful and make you want to dance. This tells us that happiness and celebration are important to the culture.

Family Beat

  • Clap your Family Beat fast, then slow.
  • Clap loudly or softly.
  • Try tapping your foot between each name.
  • Can you tell by the rhythm and tempo how your family might be feeling?
  • Try clapping together with your family to make an ensemble like the Del Sol Quartet.
  • Be prepared to laugh!

How does it Feel to be You?
